Remove a Photo Background Free: 6 Ways in 2026, Including One That Does the Whole Batch
How to remove the background from a photo for free in 2026: the tools on your iPhone, Mac and Windows PC, Adobe Firefly's free remover, what remove.bg, Photoroom and Canva give away and charge, the white-background rules on Amazon, eBay and Etsy, the PNG and file-size traps, and one message that does a whole folder of product photos.

Forty product photos on the kitchen table, each one with the tablecloth, the radiator and a corner of the cat in shot. Amazon wants a pure white background on the main image. eBay says white is best. Your own website wants them all the same size, under half a megabyte, with the edges clean. The first site you try removes one background beautifully at a resolution too small to use, then asks for a card. Photoroom's April 2026 survey of 1,356 of its own subscribers found 59% believed they had lost sales to bad product photos, which is a vendor number, but anyone who has listed a crumpled jumper against a radiator knows the feeling.
There are six ways to remove a photo background free in 2026, and five of them are already on devices you own or behind a free account. This guide covers each, with the limits the vendors publish, the marketplace rules the finished photos have to meet, the two file traps that turn a clean cut-out into a black square on Etsy, and the sixth way: one message to an AI agent that does the whole folder, resizes the results and names them for the listing.
Have the folder ready? Open the free image tool, attach the photos, and ask in the chat for the backgrounds removed and every image on white at the marketplace size. Free plan, 100 credits a day, no card.
The 6 ways at a glance
| Way | Cost | Limit | Best for | Batch? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Your phone (iPhone Photos, Android stickers) | Free | One photo at a time, no size control | A single product shot or a cut-out for a post | No |
| 2. Your computer (Mac Preview, Windows Paint or Photos) | Free | One at a time, basic edges | Occasional jobs | No |
| 3. Adobe Firefly background remover | Free with an Adobe account, daily allowance | Files up to 50 MB, transparent PNG out | Clean single cut-outs | Enterprise only |
| 4. remove.bg, Photoroom, Canva | Free previews or small allowances, then paid | remove.bg free is 0.25 megapixels; Photoroom free is 100 exports a month, non-commercial; Canva's remover is on Pro | Occasional high-quality cut-outs | Paid plans |
| 5. Shoot it so there is less to remove | Free | Needs a window and a white sheet | Every product photo from now on | Yes, at source |
| 6. An AI agent on a folder | Free plan, 100 credits a day | None on the tool page; resizes, renames and zips | Forty photos for a listing | Yes |
1. The tools already on your phone
On an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, open a photo, touch and hold the subject until it lifts, and tap Copy or Share: Apple's Photos app cuts the subject out and gives you a transparent image you can paste into a message, a document or a design app. Android's Google Photos does something narrower: press and hold the subject to make a sticker, on phones with at least 4 GB of memory. Both are fine for one photo. Neither lets you set the output size or the background colour, which the marketplaces care about.
2. The tools already on your computer
On a Mac running Ventura or later, open the photo in Preview and use the Remove Background button in the toolbar. On Windows 11, Paint has had one-click background removal since September 2023 and the Photos app got Remove and Replace background in November 2023. All three handle a clean product against a plain wall well and struggle with hair, glass and the cat. Save as PNG to keep the transparency.
3. Adobe Firefly, free with an account
Adobe's online background remover now lives under Firefly (the Express address redirects there). It is free with an Adobe account, with a daily allowance of free generations that Adobe does not state as a number, takes JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 50 MB, and downloads a transparent PNG. The edges are better than the built-in tools. Batch is for enterprise customers, so for a folder it is one at a time.
4. remove.bg, Photoroom and Canva: what is free, what is not
| Tool | Free | Paid (UK prices, 20 October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| remove.bg | Previews at up to 0.25 megapixels (about 625 by 400) for personal use; one free full-resolution credit on sign-up | 1 credit per full-resolution image; 40 credits £8 a month (£7.20 on annual billing), 200 credits £35; packs of 10 credits for £8 |
| Photoroom | 25 exports a week and 100 a month, personal and non-commercial use only | Pro £9.99 a month or £5.99 a month billed yearly for 1,000 exports a month, with batch mode |
| Canva | The background remover is marked unavailable on the free plan | Canva Pro £13 a month or £100 a year; up to 50 images at a time, photos under 9 MB |
The pattern: the first cut-out is free, the usable one costs money, and the batch costs a subscription. For a one-off, remove.bg's single credit or Firefly is the answer. For a shop, keep reading.
5. Shoot it so there is less to remove
The cheapest background removal is the one you never do. A white sheet or a sheet of card curved up behind the product, daylight from a window to one side, a sheet of white paper opposite as a reflector, and the phone on a stack of books. The photo comes out nearly white already; the tool only has to clean the edges, and the edges are where every tool fails. Shoot every product the same way, from the same place, and the whole listing matches.
6. The whole folder in one message
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Manus and Meta's Muse will cut out one image if you upload it. The Jobbit image tool is a short form for resizing and converting, and the chat it opens does the rest for the whole folder: attach the folder, say what the photos are for, and the agent removes the backgrounds, puts the products on pure white (or keeps them transparent), resizes to the marketplace size, checks each file against the rules below, names them and returns one zip. It reports anything it could not cut cleanly, which is usually the glass and the hair, so you can reshoot two rather than forty.
Message to send
I am going to attach a folder of product photos in this chat. Remove the background from each one and place the product on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), with the product filling about 85% of the frame. Export each as a JPG at 2000 by 2000 pixels for Amazon and eBay, and a second set as transparent PNGs at 1600 by 1600 for my website, each under 500 KB. Keep the originals, name the files by product, give me one zip, and tell me which photos had edges you were not confident about.
You create a free account first (an email address is all it takes, no card). Your message is kept and sent the moment you are in.

The marketplace rules your photos have to meet
| Marketplace | Background | Size | Other rules (from their seller pages) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon (main image) | Pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255 | At least 500 pixels on the longest side, 1,000 or more recommended, 10,000 maximum | Product fills about 85% of the frame; no text, logos or props on the main image |
| eBay | White "generally best"; not required | At least 500 pixels on the longest side, about 1,600 by 1,600 recommended, 12 MB maximum | No watermarks, borders or added text |
| Etsy | Your choice | At least 2,000 pixels wide and high recommended | Transparent PNGs are not supported: transparent areas appear black, so flatten onto white first |
| Your own website | Your choice | Match the theme's sizes | Keep each image small, Squarespace suggests 500 KB or less, for speed |
The two file traps
- Transparency needs PNG or WebP. A JPEG has no transparent layer; save a cut-out as JPEG and the transparency becomes white, or worse, grey. Save as PNG for transparency, JPEG for a white background that will stay white.
- Transparent on Etsy turns black. Etsy's help pages say transparent PNGs are not supported and the transparent parts render black. Flatten the cut-out onto a white background before uploading there.
Mistakes that make a cut-out look cut out
- Removing the background from a photo with no light on the product. The edge is only as clean as the contrast; shoot against white first.
- Leaving the shadow behind. A product floating on white with no shadow looks pasted; most tools and the agent can add a soft one.
- Different sizes across the listing. The eye notices a 1,600 next to a 2,000.
- Upscaling a 0.25-megapixel preview. It will be blurry on every marketplace; pay the credit or use the agent.
- Hair, glass and fur by machine alone. Check those three by eye, every time.
A 20-minute plan for a listing
- Minutes 0 to 10. Reshoot the three worst photos against a white sheet by the window.
- Minutes 10 to 13. Open the image tool, attach the folder, paste the prompt above with your sizes.
- Minutes 13 to 18. Open the zip, check the glass and the hair, reshoot anything the agent flagged.
- Minutes 18 to 20. Upload: JPGs on white to Amazon and eBay, flattened PNGs or JPGs to Etsy, the small set to your site.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove a background from a photo for free?
On an iPhone (iOS 16 or later) touch and hold the subject in Photos and copy it; on a Mac use Preview's Remove Background; on Windows 11 use Paint or Photos. Adobe Firefly's remover is free with an account for single images. For a folder, attach it on the Jobbit image tool and ask for the backgrounds removed and the images resized, on the free plan.
Is remove.bg free?
Only at preview size: the free download is up to 0.25 megapixels for personal use, with one full-resolution credit on sign-up. Full-resolution images cost a credit each, from £8 for 10 credits or £8 a month for 40.
What background does Amazon require for product photos?
A pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) on the main image, with the product filling about 85% of the frame, at least 500 pixels on the longest side and ideally 1,000 or more, according to Amazon Seller Central. Extra images can show the product in use.
Why does my transparent PNG look black on Etsy?
Etsy's help pages say transparent PNG files are not supported and transparent areas render as black. Flatten the cut-out onto a white (or any) background before uploading, and save as JPG or a non-transparent PNG.
Can I remove backgrounds from many photos at once for free?
The built-in tools and Firefly's free tier work one image at a time, and remove.bg, Photoroom and Canva put batch processing on paid plans. The agent on Jobbit processes a whole folder in one message on the free plan, resizes and renames the results, and flags the images it was unsure about.
Should I save a cut-out as PNG or JPG?
PNG (or WebP) when you need transparency, JPG when the product sits on a white background that will stay white and you want a smaller file. JPEG has no transparent layer, so a transparent cut-out saved as JPEG loses it.
What size should product photos be for a website?
Match your theme's sizes and keep each file small for speed; Squarespace suggests 500 KB or less, and many shops use 1,600 by 1,600 for product images. The image tool exports both the marketplace set and the website set from the same photos.
