Local SEO for a Small Business in 2026: 12 Google Business Profile Fixes That Bring Calls

Local SEO for a small business in 2026: Google's three local ranking factors and the twelve Google Business Profile fixes that bring calls, from categories, services with prices, hours and photos to reviews, replies, posts, booking links, matching details everywhere and a page per service, plus the 2026 review data and an agent that does it in an hour.

Local SEO for a Small Business in 2026: 12 Google Business Profile Fixes That Bring Calls
Read in:

Someone in your town types "plumber near me" or "cafe open now" and Google shows three businesses on a map before it shows a single website. Being one of those three is worth more to a local business than any other page on the internet, and it costs nothing. Google's own help page says the map ranking comes down to three things, relevance, distance and prominence, and the Whitespark survey of 47 local search experts published in November 2025 puts the Google Business Profile itself at 32% of what decides the map pack, with reviews at 20%. Most profiles are half-finished, which is why the three slots are winnable.

Local SEO for a small business is mostly the discipline of finishing that profile and keeping it alive. This guide lists the twelve fixes in the order they matter, with Google's own rules for each (photo sizes, name rules, how to ask for reviews without breaking the policy), what the 2026 review survey says customers expect, and how an AI agent does the audit, the replies and the monthly updates in an hour rather than a weekend.

Want the audit first? Open Jobbit, paste your business name and town, and ask the agent to check your profile against the twelve fixes below. Free plan, 100 credits a day, no card.

How Google decides the map, in three words

Google's help page "Tips to improve your local ranking" names relevance (does the profile match what was searched), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the place they named) and prominence (how well known you are: reviews, links, mentions). You cannot move your building, so local SEO is relevance and prominence: complete, accurate, active profile; consistent details everywhere; reviews answered. Whitespark's 2026 factors survey breaks the map pack down as profile signals 32%, reviews 20%, on-page website signals 15%, behaviour (clicks, calls, directions) 9%, links 8%, citations 6%.

Fixes 1 to 5: finish the profile

1. Category. The primary category is the single strongest relevance signal; "Plumber" and "Heating contractor" are different lists. Pick the one customers search for, then add up to nine more that you genuinely offer.

2. Services with prices. Google lets you attach a price and a description to each service, and profiles with services show them in the panel. Keep prices out of the service names themselves, which Google's rules forbid.

3. Hours. Wrong hours cost more than any other mistake, because "open now" is a filter. Set special hours for every bank holiday now; Google's limit is six consecutive days, after which you mark the business temporarily closed instead.

4. Photos. Google's spec is JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB, 720 by 720 pixels recommended, 250 by 250 minimum, and video up to 30 seconds at 720p or better and 75 MB. New photos take 24 to 48 hours to appear. Shopfront, team, work in progress, finished jobs: ten real photos, refreshed monthly.

5. Name and description. The name is your real trading name, nothing else; Google suspends profiles with keywords, phone numbers or taglines stuffed in. Service-area businesses (mobile trades, cleaners, dog walkers) should hide the address and set service areas within about two hours' drive.

Audit my Google Business Profile. Business: Carter Plumbing, Reading. Here is what the profile currently shows (pasted below) and here is my website. Check it against these twelve points: primary and additional categories, services with prices, hours and special hours, photos against Google's spec, the name rules, review count and reply rate, posts in the last 90 days, booking or quote links, whether my name, address and phone match my website exactly, whether the website has a page for each service and area, and verification status. Give me the list of fixes in priority order with the exact text to paste for each.

Fixes 6 to 9: keep it alive

6. Ask for reviews the allowed way. Google's policy allows asking customers for reviews, by link or QR code, and bans paying for them, offering incentives, or asking only the happy customers. Put the review link on the invoice, the receipt and a card at the counter; the free QR code guide covers the card.

7. Reply to every review. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 consumers found 97% read reviews for local businesses, 41% always, 80% are more likely to use a business that replies to all its reviews, and half are put off by templated replies. Reply within the week, by name, about the specific job. The bad review guide covers the hard ones.

Here are this month's Google reviews for my business (pasted below) and two replies I wrote that sound like me. Write a reply to each one as the owner: specific to what they mention, two or three sentences, by first name where there is one, plain apology and what we changed where something went wrong, no template phrases. Give me the list to paste.

8. Post every week or two. Updates, offers and events show in the profile and signal that the business is active; Google archives posts after six months unless they carry a date range. A photo of this week's job with two lines is enough.

9. Links. Google allows up to ten booking, reservation or ordering links per category. A quote form or a booking page on your own site is the link that turns a profile view into a job, and the agent builds one in a day.

Fixes 10 to 12: the signals outside the profile

10. Same name, address and phone everywhere. Google cross-checks the profile against your website and the directories; a different phone number on Yell or an old address on Facebook costs trust. Apple Business Connect (free, since January 2023) and Bing Places matter because Apple Maps and Bing feed Siri, CarPlay and Copilot. The agent checks all of them in one pass.

Check that my business name, address and phone number are identical across my Google Business Profile, my website's contact page and footer, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yell and my Facebook page. List every mismatch with the exact text on each site and what it should say. Then draft the corrections.

11. A page per service and area on your website. Whitespark puts on-page signals at 15% of the map pack. "Boiler repair in Reading" as a page with the address, the phone number written the same way, a few photos and three reviews is the page that supports the profile. An agent builds those pages from your service list in an hour; the website guide covers the rest of the site.

12. Verify and read the numbers. Google now verifies by phone, email, live video call, recorded video or postcard, and reviews a video within five business days; the video has to show the premises, the equipment or signage, and proof you run the business. Then read the profile's performance numbers monthly: calls, direction requests, website clicks, and which searches found you. Those are the only numbers in local SEO that matter.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

Google's Business Messages chat ended in July 2024, and a WhatsApp or text "chat" button has been available in some regions since early 2025. The public Q&A section was retired at the end of 2025 in favour of an AI "Ask" button, according to Google's forum notice reported by trade press. Google's AI Mode reached the UK in July 2025; whether it shows map packs for UK local searches the way it does in the US is not yet documented, so the profile, the reviews and the website page are the safe bets whatever the results page looks like next year.

How an AI agent helps

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Manus and Meta's Muse will all explain local SEO. Jobbit does the work around your profile:

  • Audits the profile against the twelve fixes and writes the exact text for categories, services and the description.
  • Drafts every review reply in your voice, for you to approve and paste.
  • Writes the fortnightly post from a photo and two facts, with the dates set so it does not expire.
  • Checks name, address and phone across the directories and drafts the corrections.
  • Builds the service and area pages on your website, hosted on your own domain on the Go plan at £7 a month.
  • Reads the monthly numbers and tells you which fix to do next.

A one-hour plan

  • Minutes 0 to 15. Paste the profile and the website into the chat; get the audit.
  • Minutes 15 to 35. Fix categories, services with prices, hours and special hours, and the name. Upload ten photos at the right size.
  • Minutes 35 to 45. Paste this month's reviews; approve and post the replies. Put the review link on the next invoice.
  • Minutes 45 to 60. Ask for the NAP check and the first fortnightly post, and set a calendar reminder for the monthly numbers.

Run the twelve-point audit on the free plan: 100 credits a day, no card, the service pages on your own domain when you are ready.

Frequently asked questions

What is local SEO for a small business?

The work that gets a business into Google's map results and local listings for searches like "near me" or "open now": a complete and accurate Google Business Profile, reviews and replies, consistent name, address and phone across the web, and a website page that matches each service and area. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence.

How do I rank higher on Google Maps?

Finish the profile (right primary category, services with prices, correct hours, photos within Google's spec), collect reviews the allowed way and reply to all of them, post regularly, keep your details identical everywhere, and give each service its own page on your website. Whitespark's 2026 survey puts the profile at 32% and reviews at 20% of what decides the map pack.

Is it against Google's rules to ask customers for reviews?

No. Google allows asking, including by link or QR code. It bans incentives for reviews, review gating (asking only happy customers) and reviews from your own staff. Reply to every review you get; BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 80% of consumers are more likely to use a business that replies to all of them.

What size should Google Business Profile photos be?

JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB, with 720 by 720 pixels recommended and 250 by 250 the minimum, according to Google's help page. Videos can be up to 30 seconds and 75 MB at 720p or higher. New photos usually appear within 24 to 48 hours.

How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?

Every week or two is enough to show the profile is active. Google archives posts after six months unless they have a date range, so offers and events should carry dates. A photo from this week's work with two lines of text is a post.

Does my business need a website for local SEO?

It helps: on-page signals are about 15% of the map pack in Whitespark's survey, and a page for each service and area, with the same name, address and phone as the profile, is what the profile links to. An agent on Jobbit builds those pages and hosts them on your domain.

Can AI manage my Google Business Profile?

It can audit it, write the categories, services and description, draft every review reply for you to post, write the fortnightly updates, check your details across directories and read the monthly numbers. Posting still happens in your Google account, which keeps you in control. Start the audit on Jobbit with the prompt in this guide.
