Agentic SEO in 2026: How to Get Your Business Found and Chosen by AI Agents
Agentic SEO explained for UK small businesses: what AI agents and answer engines read on your website, how ChatGPT and AI Overviews choose citations, what to measure, and a checklist to work through.

A growing share of your future customers will never see your website. They will ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude which plumber, accountant or software to use, read a short answer, and act on it. Increasingly they will send an agent to browse, compare and book on their behalf. Agentic SEO is the practice of making your business readable by those machines and worth recommending. Ahrefs data shows searches for "agentic SEO" up more than 5,000% and "generative engine optimization" up roughly 1,000% over 18 months.
This guide explains the shift in plain terms for a UK small business owner, founder or marketer: what agents and answer engines actually read, how they choose sources to cite, what llms.txt does and does not do, what to measure, and a checklist. It is honest about the limits too: the terminology is contested, nobody can guarantee a citation, and stuffing pages with "AI-friendly" text does nothing.
Ask Jobbit Research what ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity currently cite for your key queries, then let the same agent fix your site: structured data, an llms.txt file and a clear pricing page. Free to start at jobbit.uk.
What agentic SEO means, and why the name is contested
Three overlapping terms are doing the rounds. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is about getting your content cited in AI answers: AI Overviews in Google, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and the rest. Agentic SEO, sometimes called agent optimization, goes one step further: being usable by an agent that visits your site to do a task, such as comparing prices or making a booking. Ahrefs reports searches for "GEO vs SEO" up about 980%, so you are not behind for finding the names unclear.
Ahrefs reports that agentic traffic passed half of internet traffic in mid 2026, and that Google added an "Agentic Browsing" audit to Chrome Lighthouse. For background, read what is agentic AI and computer-use AI agents explained.
Classic SEO, GEO and agentic SEO compared
| Question | Classic SEO | GEO | Agentic SEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who reads the page | A crawler, then a person who clicked | A model assembling an answer | An agent doing a task for a person |
| What it rewards | Relevance, links, speed, click-worthy titles | Quotable facts, comparisons, consistent entity information | Clean HTML, labelled forms, plain pricing and contact details |
| Where you show up | Ranked blue links | A citation inside an answer | A recommendation, booking or purchase |
| What to measure | Rankings, clicks, conversions | AI visibility, citation share, assistant referrals | Agent task completion, untraceable enquiries |
The three are not rivals; the difference is emphasis. Classic SEO optimises for the click, while AI search visibility depends on being the source an answer is built from. Ahrefs estimates that AI Overviews cut the top result's click-through by around 58%, so ranking first and being cited are now separate outcomes.
What AI agents actually read on your website
An agent does not see your design. It sees the document, much as a screen reader does.
- Clean HTML with real headings. One H1, H2s that describe sections, paragraphs that make sense out of context, text that renders without JavaScript.
- The accessibility tree. Agents that drive a browser rely on labelled buttons, named form fields and links whose text says where they go. "Click here" tells an agent nothing.
- Structured data. JSON-LD gives a machine your name, address, hours, services and prices without guessing.
- llms.txt and markdown versions. A plain-text index of your key pages, plus markdown mirrors of them, is cheap to add and easy for a model to consume.
- Fast, uncluttered pages. Cookie walls and interstitials interrupt an agent as much as a person.
- Clear pricing and contact details. If an agent is asked "find me a bookkeeper in Leeds under £150 a month", a page that says "contact us for a quote" cannot be shortlisted. Publish prices, phone, email and address as text.
The Jobbit agent browser opens your site the way an agent does and reports what it can and cannot read; you can watch and take control.
How answer engines choose what to cite
Nobody outside the model providers knows the exact ranking, but the patterns in reported citation studies are consistent enough to act on.
- Structured comparisons. A table of options with the same attributes for each is easy to lift into an answer. Prose that buries the comparison is not.
- Enumerated lists and statistics. Reports say pages with structured lists and statistics get cited noticeably more often than prose-heavy pages. A numbered list or a sourced figure gives the model something concrete to quote.
- Being the source others cite. Models lean on pages other sites already reference. Original data or a price index for your trade earns links and citations together.
- Consistent entity information. Your name, address, phone number and description should match across your site, Companies House, Google Business Profile and directories, or the model is less confident it has the right business.

llms.txt and markdown mirrors: useful, not magic
An llms.txt file sits at the root of your domain, like robots.txt, and lists the pages a model should read first, with one line of context each. Markdown mirrors are plain versions of key pages with no navigation or scripts. Support from the major providers is unconfirmed, so treat both as low-cost hygiene rather than a ranking lever.

What to measure: AI visibility, citations and referrals
- AI visibility. For a fixed set of ten to twenty queries your customers actually ask, how often does each assistant mention you, and in what position?
- Citation tracking. When you are mentioned, which page is cited? Is it the one you wanted?
- Referrals from AI assistants. Filter your analytics for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar as the referrer. The numbers will be small; watch the trend.
- Untraceable enquiries. Ask new customers how they found you. "I asked ChatGPT" never shows in analytics.
AI rank tracking tools are compared in the best AI SEO tools. A weekly check is enough: Jobbit Automations can run the same queries every Monday and send a digest. The full weekly routine is in how to use AI for SEO; this post stays on the site itself.
The agentic SEO checklist
Work through these in order. Most take an afternoon.
- Pick your queries. Ten to twenty questions a customer would ask an assistant, in their words, with town and budget.
- See who is cited now. Run each query through the assistants, or have Jobbit Research do it, and note the sources that keep appearing.
- Fix readability. One H1 per page, descriptive H2s, labelled forms and buttons, text that renders without JavaScript.
- Add structured data. JSON-LD for your organisation and services, plus FAQ schema on pages that answer questions.
- Publish prices and contact details as text. A pricing page with plans or ranges, plus phone, email and address in every footer.
- Add llms.txt and markdown mirrors. Cover pricing, services, about and contact first.
- Write comparison and answer pages. One page per query that answers it in the first paragraph, with a table or a numbered list and sourced figures. Jobbit Documents drafts these from a brief.
- Make your entity consistent. Match name, address, phone and description everywhere your business is listed.
- Use a domain you control. Best place to buy a domain in the UK covers the options; Jobbit connects a custom domain to anything it builds.
- Measure weekly, change one thing at a time. Re-run the queries and keep a log so you can tell what worked.
Mistakes that waste your time
- Writing "for AI". Paragraphs that begin "As an AI-friendly business" do nothing. Models reward clarity, not keywords aimed at them.
- Hiding prices behind a form. An agent comparing five suppliers drops the one it cannot price.
- Blocking the crawlers. Some robots.txt templates and plugins block GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot by default. If you want citations, let them in.
- Buying a guarantee. Nobody can promise a citation. Anyone who sells one is selling hope.
Where Jobbit fits
Jobbit is one agent that does the whole loop. Jobbit Research checks what AI answers cite for your queries and audits the competitors. The agent browser reports what it can and cannot read on your site. Jobbit builds and deploys web pages and apps, so it can add JSON-LD, FAQ schema, an llms.txt file, markdown mirrors and a pricing page, then connect your domain; how to build and deploy a web app with AI shows the process. Jobbit Documents writes the comparison pages and Jobbit Automations runs the weekly check. The AI agent glossary defines any unfamiliar terms.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between agentic SEO and generative engine optimization?
GEO is about getting your content cited in AI-generated answers. Agentic SEO covers that and also the case where an agent visits your site to complete a task, such as comparing prices or making a booking. The two overlap heavily and the terms are still contested.
How do I get cited by ChatGPT?
Answer the question directly at the top of a page, include a table or a numbered list, cite your figures, and keep your business details consistent across the web. Nobody can guarantee a citation; you can only make your page the easiest one to quote.
Does llms.txt improve AI search visibility?
Not on its own, and the major providers have not confirmed they use it. It is cheap, it cannot hurt, and it gives any agent that looks a clear map of your most important pages, so treat it as hygiene alongside structured data.
How do I know if AI agents are visiting my site?
Look for user agents such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in your server logs, and for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar in your analytics. Ask new customers how they found you.
Is agentic SEO worth it for a small local business?
Yes, because the work is mostly fundamentals: clear pages, published prices, consistent contact details and structured data. Those help every visitor, human or machine, and a small business with clean information can beat a larger competitor whose prices are hidden.
