How to Use AI for SEO in 2026: A Weekly Workflow for Google, AI Overviews and AI Search
How to use AI for SEO in 2026: what changed with AI Overviews and AI search, what still works, and a weekly workflow where an AI agent does the research, drafting, technical checks and monitoring.

Search did not stop working in 2026, but it changed shape. Google answers a large share of queries with an AI Overview above the first link. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude answer questions directly and cite a handful of pages. AI agents open websites on people's behalf and pick a supplier without a human reading the page. If you do your own SEO, that is three new places to be found and one familiar place where clicks are scarcer.
This guide explains how to use AI for SEO in 2026 without throwing away what still works: what has changed, what generative engine optimization means next to classic SEO, and a weekly workflow where an AI agent does the research, drafting, technical checks and monitoring while you make the decisions. It is for a UK founder or solo marketer who wants a system, not a theory.

What changed in search in 2026
Three things, and they compound.
First, AI Overviews. Industry write-ups put them on roughly 13 to 30% of Google queries, and Ahrefs estimates that when one appears, click-through to the number one organic result falls by around 58%. For many informational queries the prize is now being the source the Overview quotes.
Second, AI answer engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude search the web, read a few pages and write an answer with citations, picking pages they can extract a clear answer from. Ahrefs data shows searches for "generative engine optimization" up roughly 1,000% over 18 months and "GEO vs SEO" up about 980%.
Third, agents. Searches for "agentic SEO" are up over 5,000% on the same Ahrefs data. That is software that browses on someone's behalf, compares suppliers and picks one. What is agentic AI explains the category.
The result is often called zero-click search: the searcher gets the answer without visiting anyone. You cannot stop it. You can make sure your business is the one named.
What still works, and why AI does not replace it
Every AI Overview and every answer engine sits on top of a web index. The pages that get cited are crawlable, fast, clearly structured and written by someone who knows the subject. That is the list Google has published for years. AI SEO is not a replacement for it; it is a faster way through it.
So the fundamentals hold: a site that loads quickly on a phone, one page per intent, clear internal links, real expertise with first-hand detail, and links from places your customers read. What AI changes is the cost of the work around them: keyword research takes minutes, a content brief is a prompt, a weekly check is a scheduled agent. The judgement about what to publish, and whether it is true, stays with you.
GEO vs SEO: what generative engine optimization means
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, means making your pages the ones AI systems quote. It overlaps with SEO almost entirely, with three differences.
- Answers over rankings. A citation is a sentence in an answer, not a position on a list. To earn it, a page needs a passage that states the answer directly near the top of the relevant section.
- Structure over prose. Structured, enumerated, comparison-style content tends to be cited more by AI answer engines than loose prose. Numbered steps, tables and labelled FAQs give a model something it can lift cleanly.
- Entities over keywords. Answer engines work out who you are, what you sell and where you operate. Consistent business details across your site, your Google Business Profile and directories matter more than repeating a phrase.
A related but separate job is making your site readable and chosen by AI agents that browse on a customer's behalf: clean HTML, an llms.txt file, structured data and pages that answer what an agent asks before it shortlists you. That has its own guide: agentic SEO: how to get found by AI agents.
The weekly AI SEO workflow, step by step
This is the system. It takes an hour or two of your time a week, and the agent does the rest. Each step names the part of Jobbit that does it.
- Monday: read the digest. A Jobbit Automations agent runs on a schedule and delivers a weekly digest: which tracked keywords moved, which pages gained or lost, and your AI search visibility, meaning whether AI answers cite your site for the queries you care about. How to automate your business with AI agents covers scheduled agents.
- Research one topic cluster. Jobbit Research pulls the keyword cluster, the pages that currently rank, and what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's Overview cite for the main queries, with a source on every finding. The method is in how to run deep research with AI.
- Look at the pages like a visitor. Ask the agent to open your page and the top competitor's in its browser and compare what each answers, leaves out and how each is structured. This is computer use, explained in computer-use AI agents explained, and it catches what a keyword tool cannot.
- Turn findings into a brief, then a draft. Jobbit Documents turns the research into a content brief: query, intent, headings, questions to answer, sources to cite. Approve it, then ask for the draft. Because the work sits in Jobbit Projects, which hold your brand voice, keyword list and site files, it sounds like you.
- Edit for truth and voice. Read the draft as a customer would. Add the detail only you know: the job you did last month, the price, the thing that goes wrong. Cut anything you cannot stand behind.
- Fix one technical item. FAQ schema, a missing llms.txt file, a landing page for a cluster that has none. Jobbit builds and deploys web pages, so the agent can ship the fix rather than hand you a to-do.
- Publish and log. Note the change in a spreadsheet the agent keeps. Next Monday's digest tells you whether it worked.
A research brief that gets useful findings back
Vague requests get generic keyword lists. This kind of brief produces something you can act on:
1Research the topic cluster "boiler servicing cost" for a heating engineer2covering Leeds and Bradford.3 4Context is in the project: our site, our keyword list, our brand voice.5 6I need:71. The 15 to 25 queries in this cluster, grouped by intent, with rough8 monthly UK volume where a source gives one.92. The top 5 pages ranking for the main query, with a one-line note on10 what each covers and how it is structured (tables, steps, FAQs).113. What Google's AI Overview, ChatGPT and Perplexity currently cite for12 "how much does a boiler service cost UK" and whether we appear.134. Gaps: questions searchers ask that none of the top pages answer well.14 15Cite a source for every figure. Do not estimate volumes without one.16Deliver as a spreadsheet (.xlsx) plus a one-page summary.
It names the market, points at the project for context, states what to return and forbids invented numbers. How to write prompts for AI agents covers the pattern.
Writing content that AI answer engines cite
A few habits raise the odds of being quoted rather than skipped.
- Answer in the first paragraph of each section. State the fact, the price range or the recommendation, then explain.
- Use tables for comparisons. Three or more options with two or more attributes should be a table. It is far easier for a model to cite accurately.
- Number the steps. Numbered lists with a bold lead-in per step get lifted into "how to" answers largely intact.
- Add a short FAQ with real questions. Use the phrasing from your research and mark it up with FAQ schema.
- Show first-hand evidence. A photo of the job, a real price range, a named case. This separates a page a model trusts from the nine that say the same thing.
AI SEO tools compared
Most owners end up with two or three of these. Here is what each is for.
| Tool | Best for | Keyword and rank data | AI visibility tracking | Writes and publishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jobbit | The whole weekly workflow in one agent | Via research with sources | Yes, checks what AI answers cite | Yes, documents and deployed pages |
| Semrush | Keyword, competitor and backlink data | Large proprietary index | Yes, AI visibility features | Drafting tools, no publishing |
| Ahrefs | Backlink analysis and keyword research | Large proprietary index | Yes, AI visibility features | No |
| Surfer | On-page optimisation against ranking pages | Content-focused, not rank tracking | Limited | Drafts inside its editor |
| ChatGPT | General drafting and quick research | No native data | No | Drafts, no publishing |
| Google Search Console | Your own site's Google performance, free | Your real impressions and clicks | No | No |
| Jasper | Marketing copy at volume in a brand voice | No native data | No | Drafts, with publishing integrations |
Semrush and Ahrefs are the databases: if you need a competitor's backlink profile or volume for ten thousand keywords, they have it. Surfer is a focused on-page editor. Google Search Console is free and the only source of your actual click data. ChatGPT and Jasper draft. Jobbit runs the workflow end to end, from research to the deployed page and the Monday digest. Mistakes that get AI SEO penalised or ignored
- Publishing unedited AI drafts at scale. The one thing search engines have said plainly they will act on. Edit every page, or publish fewer.
- Thin programmatic SEO. Two hundred pages from one template that differ only by the town name is the most common way a small site earns a manual action. Programmatic SEO is only safe when the data is genuinely different per page and a human checks a sample.
- Chasing AI Overviews with filler. A generic "what is" section on every page does not earn a citation. A direct, correct answer does.
- Inventing statistics. Models will produce a number that sounds right. Insist on sources and check them.
- Tracking rankings only. A position without an AI visibility check misses half the picture. Ahrefs reports searches for "AI rank tracking" up about 175%.
- Skipping the technical fix. A strong page with no schema or a broken canonical still loses. Ship one fix a week.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI replace an SEO agency for a small business?
For much of the routine work, yes: research, briefs, drafts, technical checks and monitoring can run through an agent on a weekly schedule. What it does not replace is judgement about what to publish, the first-hand detail that makes a page trustworthy, and the relationships that earn links.
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO aims at rankings on a results page. Generative engine optimization aims at being cited inside AI answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. The fundamentals overlap almost completely; GEO adds more emphasis on direct answers, structured content and consistent entity details.
How do I know if my site appears in AI Overviews or ChatGPT answers?
Run the queries and read the citations, regularly. Jobbit Research checks what AI answers currently cite for a query, and a Jobbit Automations agent can repeat the check weekly and deliver it as a digest alongside your rankings.
Does Google penalise AI-written content?
Google's stated position is that it rewards helpful content regardless of how it was produced, and acts against content generated at scale to manipulate rankings. An edited, accurate, specific page is fine; a hundred unedited pages are not. The workflow above puts a human edit before every publish.
How much time does AI SEO take each week?
An hour or two, once the automation is set up. Reading the digest, approving a brief, editing one draft and signing off one fix is a realistic week for a solo marketer. The terms used here are defined in the AI agent glossary.
